Best of Fish Tacos round up in this week’s NYT’s $25 and Under. Mmmm. Nothing like Mahi mahi in a corn tortilla. The spot below’s only a 5 minute walk from my apt, which makes it this week’s dining mission. If it’s pic worthy, may just post.
(As an aside, the La Esquina Taqueria on Lafayette and Kenmare is my ultimate fav for tacos, although the fish taco can be pretty messy, as Mike can attest. Better to stick with the pork and pineapple or steak. They’re both delicious.)
PINCHE TAQUERIA 227 Mott Street (Prince Street), (212) 625-0090, and 333 Lafayette Street (Bleecker Street), (212) 343-9977, pinchetaqueria.com; Monday to Thursday, noon to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday to midnight and Sunday to 8 p.m.
…these are textbook-perfect fish tacos ($3.75 apiece). Atop a borderline-puny corn tortilla, the beer-battered mahi-mahi wears a frizzy toupee of shredded cabbage squirted with crema, the runny Mexican version of sour cream.
Pinche’s tacos are an exercise in harmony. The buttery mahi-mahi is made richer by a prickly tomatillo salsa, while the cabbage contributes a sweetness that is surprising if you haven’t eaten good raw cabbage in a while. The house-made tortilla even tastes of roasted corn. If that sense of balance were transferable, you would be ready for the overhead waves of the Tijuana Sloughs.
