Instead of thinking of the short, easy word first, I think of the longer, more exact word. I am constantly having to remember to write pitches with words people can actually understand. Just now, I wrote that the results of a study I am writing about were “disconcerting.” No, Glenda, no. No one wants to read long words. They like them short and sensational, like “alarming,” “shocking,” or “bad”.
This weekend we roasted Mike’s friend for his 30th birthday. I was totally called out for using the word scrupulous. “No one understands what that means!”
What’s the point of knowing these words if no one knows what the f*ck I’m talking about?
It sounds like a bizarre triple bill: Coldplay, Tool and Beastie Boys. And it would be, if the three groups were to perform together. But, more sensibly, they will headline different nights of this summer’s All Points West Music and Arts Festival.
“The festival, scheduled for Fri.-Sun., July 31-Aug. 2 at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, will feature hip-hop veterans Beastie Boys on July 31, prog-metal masters Tool topping the Aug. 1 bill, and the moody but explosive rock band Coldplay to close the festival, Aug. 2.”
Last year was so much fun, there’s no way that I’m missing this!!
Hell yes!!! APW was awesome last year, and I think this year will definitely be just as good. I’d say better, but Radiohead is my fav, so it’s a close call. Outdoor music fests are the best part of summer.
The long-range thinking and individualistic type. They are especially good at looking at almost anything and figuring out a way of improving it - often with a highly creative and imaginative touch. They are intellectually curious and daring, but might be physically hesitant to try new things.
The Scientists enjoy theoretical work that allows them to use their strong minds and bold creativity. Since they tend to be so abstract and theoretical in their communication they often have a problem communicating their visions to other people and need to learn patience and use concrete examples. Since they are extremely good at concentrating they often have no trouble working alone.
(via Reuters) Interesting. Further evidence that weight is often determined by genetics. In the future, I wonder if doctors will be able to recommend a diet and fitness program specifically tailored to your genes from birth.
This new online model for overseas reporting is inspired, with revenue coming from a mix of ad sales as well as a special section of paid content that gives subscribers a voice in the news process.
"Called Passport, it offers access to GlobalPost correspondents, including exclusive reports on business topics of less interest to general audiences, conference calls and meetings with reporters, and breaking news e-mail messages from those journalists."
The passport section seems to go beyond the casual, social atmosphere blogs provide, instead offering a self-selected exclusive community of news-enthustiasts access to newsrooms, not just the content they produce. I think this kind of “membership” is exactly what people will pay for. Hopefully GlobalPost can publicize the venture quickly enough to gain a devoted following that will fund their 65 prestigious correspondents worldwide.
Turn that shit up! One of the best pump-up songs. All of Battle of Los Angeles makes me melt. Nothing compares to seeing Rage’s reunion tour at VooDoo fest a couple years back. Wish they’d play some more fests this summer too….
