Cinco de Mayo at El Nuevo Amanecer

Was fiending for the obligatory Mexican comida for Cinco de Mayo yesterday. After stopping by at least four packed-to-the-brim LES Mexican eateries, we finally found an open table at El Nuevo Amanecer.  I was a little hesitant about diving in for some grub, since the place is only known for its famous to-go Margaritas. However, as my alternative was the oh-so-familiar San Loco, I decided to risk it.

Then our entrees came. Enchiladas and chimichangas topped with…mozzerella? Yes. Mozzerella on my enchilada. With a side of white rice dyed orange. I kid you not. This was verified by the stray, paper-white clumps untouched by the…orange food coloring? We weren’t quite sure exactly what produced that pumpkin shade. However, I must admit that while the rice was less than appetizing, the enchiladas were still delicious. I mean, any cheese is good cheese.

Conclusion? if you’re looking for a Mexican/Italian/Asian fusion restaurant, El Nuevo Amanecer is the place for you. If you prefer to keep your Cinco de Mayo fusion free, try El Sombrero down the street. At least their queso is cheddar.
